Linux is built upon Unix. It depends on what he wants to do with it. Linux for servers and the like, i.e. professional builds, aren’t necessarily free either.
I don’t know about blindly but linux can do just about everything unix can do sine its UNIX BASED
Linux could be substituted for unix in most cases, the largest issue is configuration and support.
Well, for starters, Unix is a spexification while Linux is a kernel. I would have to know exactly what he’s doing to suggest what to do.
I love the term “good old UNIX”
The whole Internet infrastructure is based upon UNIX and various different version. There is Nothing old about the most stable 64bit OS. Now I’m a Windows chap but in large environments it is just common sense to stick to a robust stable system. Unix systems are for big boys and rightly so. You would make a fool of yourself to suggest Linux as an alternative and I don’t like to tell anyone to shut up
Linux is built on unix, just like mac os x. Some versions of linux and unix you have to pay for, Ubuntu server i think is free, but is not as good as red hat enterprise but i think you have to pay for it.
So its really up to him, anything he can do on unix he should be able to do in linux, so its really up to him, and if he has the funds for unix (if its costing him) why not let him just go with unix.
Linux is to Unix as a Corvette is to a Mac Truck.
Linux is prettier and friendlier and has more new toys to do the new fancy things. Its become a very nice desktop OS. Its easier to learn. And like a corvette you probably COULD use it for all the same purposes but its not always going to be the best choice. Everything has its pros and cons. Sometimes I recommend Linux. Sometimes Mac. Sometimes even WIndows. And sometimes Unix.
I recommend UNIX when its a standard old thing that its doing. Especially if its large. Such as maybe a large database, or a newsgroup server, or a mail server Its abit harder to manage without all the neat new toys but that makes it more robust. Ive known unix servers that ran for years in a closet with everyone in the business forgetting where it even was.
